One of the many skills that many of us have but tend to take for granted, is the ability to read. Today we should all take a moment and recognize that not everybody has this ability and to be grateful for such a skill. To celebrate this fact, the best way is to use the skill by picking up a book and reading. If you have young children, then tonight don't forget to read a bed time story and encourage reading.
According to the U.S. Department of Education, at least 32 million Americans are unable to read.
Literacy and it's importance to humans quality of life in this modern world can not be overstated. The ability to read not only allows much more effective communication and understanding of the world around us, but also can present much more opportunities to secure work and to keep oneself safe from harm or dangers by reading cautionary signs. Reading and understanding contracts, agreements and letters can also ensure you are being treated fairly or how a subject is being interpreted by all parties involved. Reading and writing can also create a much more advanced and civilized culture, capable of creating and sustaining government, and managing various quality of life activities and inventions for a society. Literacy is also a great leisurely activity that many people around the world partake in, to take their minds away from their current situation and immerse themselves into another world of fiction. Education and the advancement of science, medicine and technology is made by all important reading and writing activities.
