A serving size of Pistachios is 1 ounce and consists of about 49 nuts.


Whether it's pudding, ice cream, or just cracking open a few to enjoy, Pistachios are a great snack and offer a wonderful flavor to many foods.  Pistachios are biennial crops which means less production and this is a big reason why they are often higher in price than other nuts.  As a part of the cashew family, the nut in extremely popular in the region of their origin, which is noted to be of the Middle East and Asia.  Iran ( formerly known in ancient times as Persia ) accounts for over half of the worlds Pistachio supply.  The nuts have been consumed by royalty and common folk for centuries and there are even records showing the nut has history as far back as 700 BC.  It wasn't however until late 1800's and early 1900's that the Pistachio was introduced, started growing operations and became a popular nut choice among Americans.

  1. A Pistachio has as much protein as an egg.
  2. Pistachio's are a healthy food choice and have the American Heart Association Certification.
  3. In Iran, Pistachio's are known as the smiling nut.
  4. Pistachios are one of the only two nuts mentioned in the Bible, and the reference can be found in the Genesis 43:11.
  5. Due to their great antioxidant properties, a Pistachio has green and purple color to them.
