Widely associated with Italy, the word pizza was first recorded in the small city of Gaeta, Italy in 997 A.D.  Upon arriving in the United States, the Italian immigrants not only brought their affection of pizza with them but also their vast knowledge and expert pizza making skills. Another reason for the popularity of pizza in the U.S. is because of the American troops that spent time in Italy during the war brought back their new found love and search for the popular food they come to love while serving in the region.  There are many types of pizzas and toppings with some being rectangle in shape and others being circular.  Some popular toppings include cheese, pepperoni, sausage, olives, and many other custom creations based on geography and tastes.
