Today there are a few different type of people that can celebrate this day appropriately.  First of all, men that can grow a beard can decide to shave their existing beard. Second, a man that has a difficult time growing a beard can rejoice in the day, and Third, any girlfriends or wives that detest their men having a rough or or large amount of facial hair and want it gone.  The ability to grow a beard while on duty, has been a hot topic as of late in the ranks of the U.S. Military, and currently is not allowed while on active duty.


The average male beard has the same number of hairs as a woman's legs and underarms combined, about 7,000 to 15,000 hairs.


In ancient times, it has been said that men grew long beards for three main reasons. First, for warmth. Secondly men grew their beards for protection as a beard provides the face with protection from the elements, and a natural shield from the more delicate parts of the face around the mouth and lips. Some religions even consider a beard to be essential for all males.
