Instead of buying a new shirt or blanket you could always try your hand at sewing and make your own at home.  If you have some clothes that need altering, today is a great day to drop them off for a sewing professional.  The sewing machine is a great tool and one of the best labor saving devices ever invented that we all benefit from on a daily basis.

To make garments or to make fabrics come together with a thread, there is no other invention that saves as much time in this tedious process than a sewing machine. This machine is used to sew fabric and materials together with thread and with the aid of a skilled operator, make numerous types of clothing, blankets, awnings etc.  First invented during the Industrial Revolution, sewing machines were used to reduce the amount of time and manual labor required by clothing companies to make clothes.  In the late 1800's and early 1900's several machines were introduced to market and each one making improvements on the other. There are two main types of machines, one is the industrial type used for factories and large scale applications, and the other is the more recognizable domestic one seen in households. Today many women still use sewing machines at home for personal use making clothing, blankets and various arts and crafts.

  1. In the old days it used to take an experienced seamstress at least 14 hours to make mans dress shirt with a needle and thread.
  2. With the aid of a sewing machine a mens dress shirt can be created in 15 minutes.
  3. After the initial commercial success of sewing machines took off. so did the cotton industry in order to keep up with the new demand.
  4. The Quattro sewing machine made by the Brother company is currently the words most expensive, selling at 9,000 dollars.
  5. The oldest  family-owned sewing machine manufacturer is Bernina which has been operating since 1893.
